After John Piper

A time lapse video done from an image of John Pipers tapestry “Rural Reading”, commissioned by the town in 1974. From the 1940’s he began to design for textiles, including home furnishing fabric designs for Sanderson and the powerful and enormous reredos tapestry in Chichester Cathedral, commissioned by the then (art loving) Dean, Walter Hussey. His designs were celebrated in a lovely exhibition at Pallant House Gallery earlier this year.

I start by loosely painting the background in watercolour and then monoprinting and painting the motifs on top in opaque gouache. For the monoprinting I’m using a thin sheet of clear acrylic and gouache mixed to the right consistency with water and a few drops of gum arabic
